The MVP checklist for founders

Nineteen questions to answer before you build your first version, written by the ShooraTech engineering team.

How to use it

Go through each group in order and tick what you can answer clearly. Anything you cannot answer is what to find out next, before you spend money on a build. A free 30-minute idea call is a good way to compare your answers with an engineer's view.

1. Problem and user

  • Write the problem in one sentence that a stranger can follow
  • Name the one type of user you are building for first
  • Talk to at least five people who have this problem
  • Write down what they do today instead of using your product

2. Scope

  • List every feature you can think of, then mark the ones the idea cannot work without
  • Move the rest to a later list and leave them out of version one
  • Define the one journey a user must finish
  • Write down what you will not build yet

3. Success measures

  • Pick one measure that shows people want it, such as sign-ups, repeat use or paid pilots
  • Set the number that would make you carry on
  • Decide how you will collect that number

4. Build and launch

  • Get the scope, timeline and price in writing before work starts
  • Agree in writing who owns the code and the accounts
  • Ask for a demo every week
  • Plan how your first ten users will find the product
  • Set aside time and money for fixes after launch

5. Legal and trust

  • Use an NDA when you share sensitive details
  • Add a privacy notice if you collect personal data
  • Check the rules for your field, such as payments or health data
